Before buying a donor ECU

Check ECU numbers first

Send clear photographs of both ECU labels before buying a donor ECU. Donor part numbers, hardware type and software compatibility must be checked before cloning is attempted.

  • Original ECU has failed but data may still be readable
  • Matching donor ECU needs immobiliser-related data transferred
  • No-start after fitting an unmatched replacement ECU
  • Garage needs bench ECU cloning without the full vehicle present
  • EEPROM, flash or immobiliser-related data may need transfer
Process

How ECU cloning works

1. Send ECU label photos

Send clear photos of the original and donor ECU labels, plus vehicle details and fault information.

2. Compatibility check

The donor ECU is checked against the original ECU type, part number and vehicle requirements.

3. Read original data

Original ECU data must be readable where required. EEPROM, flash and immobiliser data may be involved.

4. Transfer and advise

Data is transferred where supported. Some installations may still require vehicle-side coding or adaptation.

What to provide

Details needed before ECU cloning

  • Vehicle registration, make, model, year and engine size
  • Photos of the original ECU label and donor ECU label
  • Whether the original ECU is readable or communicates
  • Whether the donor ECU has already been purchased or fitted
  • Fault codes, symptoms and what work has already been completed

FAQ

ECU cloning questions

Do you need the whole vehicle for ECU cloning?
Not always. In many cases the original and donor ECUs can be posted, but this depends on ECU type, immobiliser system and whether the original data can be read.
Can I buy any used ECU with the same engine size?
No. Send clear photographs of both ECU labels before buying a donor ECU. The wrong donor can waste money and may not be suitable.
What if the original ECU data cannot be read?
If the original data cannot be read, a normal clone may not be possible. Alternative repair, data recovery or vehicle-side coding options may be discussed.
