What we check before programming
STEP 01
Connect on the bench or in boot mode
The ECU is accessed directly, bypassing the normal OBD communication route.
STEP 02
Read and back up
Existing data is read and backed up wherever possible before anything is written.
STEP 03
Write the required software
The correct software is written to the ECU using the appropriate hardware and protocol.
STEP 04
Verify before refit
The unit is tested for correct operation before going back into the vehicle.

Why can't every ECU be programmed over OBD?
Some faults, locked units, or specific ECU types simply can't be reached safely over the OBD port, so a direct bench or boot connection is needed instead.
Is bench programming riskier than OBD?
It's a different, well-established method — done correctly with the right hardware and backups in place, it's a safe and standard part of ECU work.
Can you bench-program a donor ECU before I fit it?
Yes — this is a common job, especially alongside cloning, so the donor unit is ready to work correctly once fitted.
